I dropped Episode 2 of Pokémon Planet this week! And to celebrate, I’ve been nerding out on what makes great films actually work. Cameras, creatures, invisible VFX. All the good stuff 🤩

Here’s what I’ve been watching and learning from:

🎥Pokemon Planet: Making films with free software ☕

Every shot of Pokémon Planet is built in Blender for the creatures, environments and effects, then finished in DaVinci Resolve for compositing and colour. And both these programs are free!

If you’re learning animation or want to make films from home, this episode is proof you don’t need a studio. Just time, curiosity, and a slightly unhealthy amount of coffee 😅

🌏The Secret Cinematography of Planet Earth🙊

To push Pokémon Planet’s realism, I’ve been diving into how wildlife documentaries are actually filmed and this breakdown from Vox blew my mind.

In film making the camera is often treated as a character and in documentaries that’s even more true. From time-lapses that track entire seasons to motion-control rigs and camera operators waiting weeks for a single shot, Vox shows how Planet Earth captures animals like they’re in an Hollywood Blockbuster.

I'll be looking to adopt these camera techniques into my next animation and I encourage you to do so too.

Mimicking real life is challenging and no one does it better than ILM. In this video Todd Vaziri breaks down iconic shots from Star Wars, Dungeons & Dragons and Transformers. Todd shows how much work goes into effects you’re not supposed to notice - all slipped in so seamlessly you’d never guess.
